Ali says my house might have been stoned for this if it had been written in slightly less obtuse manner: Ex Cultur Robur
My first report, quite the donor driven but I do like the section on the dilemma of the civil society. Report is on documenting education innovations piloted by NGOs (the parochial definition of civil society we work with here).

wow!
You start off with a dictionary definition of culture and the rest of the article fails to provide any hint of a deeper, more sophisticated understanding of the term. I am not surprised that the newspapers are publishing these articles for we all know the sort standards, or complete lack thereof, that they subscribe to. What i find disturbing is that you would actually let your name be associated with this. I sure hope this is just in order to embellish your resume or at the least you are getting paid for this. I am not saying this because i am an asshole, i might well be that but that's besides the point i am trying to make here and i know you are smart enough to realize that.
Bassaam: Thank you!
Ahmad: Jinx! I was having that discussion with my AD today. It is impossible to explore any topic in depth in 500 words particularly those in history and politics. It's barely enough space to put forward one fort of an idea. More seriously even if such as idea is to be put forward, it would not make for newspaper reading because academic writing is miles apart from journalizing/editorializing not only in terms of style but more significantly content. So that is a valid critique and it stands but at the end of the day, you have to see what you can do, how much of a space you can make within existing parameters rather than backing off I think.
As for the reference to the term, didn't mean it to sound cavalier. I used it just to qualify it through a historical episode i.e. term is used frequently and happily it is assumed that power dictates culture. The qualification was in the form of one episode where one imposition was used to fight back another.
